Charterhouse Young Learners Summer Course requires pupils to be of a minimum English language “medium level”, with all teaching, support, and other activities conducted in English. It is, therefore, essential that all pupils demonstrate the appropriate level of proficiency in English at a compulsory spoken English of average to high.
(Level B1 – CERF).
*This is not an English language tuition course (EFL/ESL), but an average to high English language skill is required to successfully complete this course.
Stage 3: Offer and Contract
We are delighted to offer 80 spaces each year for our two-week course. Offers are accepted, and contracts are signed prior to the advised deadlines.

We would like to sincerely thank you and your entire team for the brilliant and well-organised Young Learners Summer Camp – congratulations on such a fantastic job.
Valentino was truly happy during his time with you all (and quite sad to leave!). We’ve noticed a lovely improvement in his spoken English, and beyond that, he absolutely loved his first experience of being away from family and close friends.

FAQs
Enrollment and Admissions
When does enrolment close?
---
|
Enrolment closing date is Monday 1 June 2026 for summer admissions; all booking forms need to have been submitted by this date. Spaces are limited and so we would encourage you to book as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. |
My child is slightly younger than the published age range of the course, can they attend?
Unfortunately, that won’t be possible. All students must be within the published age range to attend.
Accomodation Arrangements
What is the set up for student accommodation? Do students need to share rooms and bathroom facilities?
---
There is a combination of rooms in our boarding houses, some singles, twins and quad rooms. Rooms are allocated once bookings close and are set pre arrival and are then allocated when students arrive onsite. If any students wish to share with friends or siblings (same sex only) this can be specified on the booking form. Bathroom facilities are either en-suite or shared with their roommate if they share a room or their neighbors.
Do students need to provide their own toiletries, towels etc.?
|
All bedding is provided. Students will need to bring their own towels and toiletries and hairdryers, if required. Please be aware of the voltage here in the UK and bring the correct adaptor – 12AMP 240V 3 pin square plugs. |
Is laundry service provided?
Laundry will be carried out on campus 3 times over the period of the 2-week course. Students will be provided with net bags to enable them to put dirty clothes into and then add them to laundry when this happens. They will be given clear instructions and guidance by house staff when laundry happens.
Are there any specific rules or guidelines students should be aware of? When will they be informed of the rules and how?
They will be given a welcome and briefing by the Academic Course Director on the first day and be introduced to staff.
Are there any local accommodations for parents that may be staying in the area for a holiday during students stay on the course?
There are plenty of options in the local surrounding areas for accommodation options for any parents that may be dropping students off to attend the programme, either in Godalming itself or close by in Guildford.
Meal Arrangements
What are the types of meals provided, such as buffets or set meals? Can you share with us the sample menus?
---
Students will have breakfast, lunch and dinner in the dining hall and this is a typical canteen style server, with hot options, a salad bar and dessert and fruit.
Will there be any availability of special meals like vegetarian or gluten free options?
Any dietary requirements can be catered for as long as we are advised of this in plenty of time and any allergies etc. can be communicated with Charterhouse when parents are completing the Medical Declaration Form.
Besides breakfast, lunch, and dinner, will there be any snacks during break?
Students will have a mid-morning break after their morning 2 lessons, a small packet of biscuits and something to drink.
Course Arrangements
Will there be any course assessment methods, such as exams, assignments, and class participation that the students should be aware of?
---
The course is varied and is designed to engage the students in various ways, but there is nothing that they need to be aware of in advance. Students will be placed in different classes based on their skill level and English standard. There could be some adjustment over the first few days of the course if academic staff feel that some students have better/worse skills than initially thought.
Are there any recommended pre-reading books or pre-reading materials to help the students prepare for the course?
This will be issued shortly by our language and literature teacher and will be shared prior to the course starting.
What should students bring with them? Will you supply a packing list?
We will send students a packing list of suggestions of what to bring, both for clothing and for stationery, that could be required for classroom lessons. It’s worth remembering British weather can be unpredictable so packing for all eventualities will be worthwhile.
Medical Support
Is there medical support in the school? What are the opening hours for the medical support? How should the students get medical support when needed?
---
|
We will have a ‘surgery’ each morning where our onsite nurse will be available to administer any medication or see any children who may be feeling unwell. If they are feeling unwell, they will be told to let either the House Parent, teaching staff, or one of the Assistants know they feel unwell. |
Can the medical team provide diagnosis and treatment of common diseases and emergency rescue measures?
Our nurses will be able to assess any needs, and all staff are fully First Aid trained should there be an emergency.
Can students get the needed medicine from the medical? Or is there any way they can get the medicine needed?
The nurse and House Parent will be able to provide basic medicines depending on the needs of the student.
Is there any hospital nearby? How long does it take to get there? Is it open 24H for emergency medical service?
Royal Surrey Hospital is in Guildford and about 20 minutes from Charterhouse should there be an emergency. This has a 24hr Accident and Emergency Department.
What is the medicine declaration process? What information is needed for the medicine declaration?
Any medication (that a child needs to be taking whilst at Charterhouse, this includes tablets, creams, eye drops/ointment, vitamins, or other remedies) needs to be in its original packaging, containing the patient information leaflet and labelled in English with the child’s name, dosage, and frequency and expiry date. Without this we will be unable to administer. Please note that on arrival at check in we will remove any medication students are travelling with for safekeeping and return these to them on their departure.
Will the medicine which has been declared be stored by the school staff or kept by the students themselves?
See above.
Transportation Arrangements
What is the check in and check out time? If the parents are dropping and picking up the students at school by themselves, what time are they expected? Can the parents enter the school?
---
Students arrive with their parents between 3pm and 8pm on 20 July, and pick-up is before 12pm on 3 August. Should there be a different person picking up the student, we need to know this in advance and need to know the name of this person, and they need to bring ID with them that can be checked before the child leaves the site.
Communication Mechanisms
Is there any mobile phone policy for students? Will their phones be kept and distributed uniformly?
---
Phones along with tablets and smart watches are all collected from students on arrival at the campus and will be stored safely and securely. Students then will be handed back their phones between their mid-morning lessons (around 10:15 UK time) or after dinner (around 18:45 UK time) when they will be able to contact home, after that they will be re-collected. They will not be given their phones to take on trips with them, which means on these excursion days they will not be able to contact home.
How can we reach our children to talk to them if needed?
|
Students will be well taken care of for the duration of the course, and parents will be able to speak to students during the times they have their phones as mentioned above. You will be able to reach the Course Director via email (CYLSC@charterhouse.org.uk) with a response within 12hours (time difference depending), and you will be issued with an emergency contact number that can be used in an emergency to contact one of the senior team. A regular newsletter will be sent out to parents 3 times over the duration of the course, with an update on how the programme is going. |
Can the students’ parents visit them in the school? What is the rule of the visit? How should they apply to visit? Will there be any school staff to give the visitors a tour of the school?
We advise against this, as this can cause further home sickness for some students and upset the rhythm of the students settling into the programme. We will not run any tours; no staff will be available to do this. We advise parents to get in touch with Charterhouse Admissions team as early as possible should they be considering/be in the process of applying to Charterhouse to see if there is any option of a school tour for this purpose.
Pocket Money
|
|
---
We are a fully cashless site, along with all the venues that students will be visiting on their trips and excursions. We will NOT be able to cater for cash, so we ask parents to provide students with pre-paid spending card. This will only be required for trips and anything they may want to buy on trips; we advise no more than 200-300 GBP for the whole course.
